Judson’s Tevin Russell Signs Full Basketball Scholarship to Texas A&M Kingsville

Tevin Russell, a 6’3” senior basketball player at Judson High School signed a full scholarship agreement with Texas A&M Kingsville at 3:30 pm today. Located in Kingsville, Texas, the Javelinas are one of the up and coming NCAA Division II basketball programs in the southwest. They are a member of the legendary Lone Star Conference and are coached by Pete Peterson.

Tevin, the son of Bridgett Merriweather of San Antonio, said, “I am really excited to start my college career at A&M Kingsville with Coach Pete. He has built a solid program where I feel I will be able to reach my potential as a student, person and basketball player.”

From beyond the three point arc, Tevin had a three point field goal percentage of 41.6% for the past two seasons. Tevin also led the team in FT% this season at 81.3%, while dishing out assists at a clip of 3.3 per game. Tevin also contributed as a guard on the boards, pulling down 4.1 rebounds per game, including 48 offensive rebounds. The Rockets were also the best 5A team in the state in Scoring Defense giving up only 44.8 points per game for the season, while scoring at a clip of 56.2 ppg. As a result Tevin scored 11.1 ppg which was 20% of the team total ppg, while leading the Rockets to such a successful season.

Tevin led the team to back to back Regional Tournaments, with a 33-7 record and Elite Eight finish this season as the Rockets finished ranked 9th in final TABC statewide poll. Tevin helped the Rockets to a school best combined 69 wins and just 9 losses for his two year varsity career. Tevin is considered one of the top prospects in the state, earning post season honors as a TABC All-Region Selection, while also making First Team All-District 27-5A. As a junior he was a key scorer off the bench in helping the Rockets to a school best 36-2 record, and he made All-District 26-5A Honorable Mention.

“Tevin is a tremendous player, and could make a significant impact as a freshmen next season. He is a great shooter and can score from anywhere,” said Judson Head Basketball Coach Mike Wacker. “He plays smart, and is always active on both ends of the floor. Not only is he a great person, with his priorities in order, but I feel Tevin’s best basketball is ahead of him. I believe A&M Kingsville is fortunate to sign Tevin.”

His mom, Bridgett Merriweather said, “I am extremely happy for Tevin. He has worked very hard and I am a very proud parent on this exciting day. We are really happy for him to attend Texas A&M Kingsville.”

Tevin is an honor roll student and earned membership on the TABC Academic All State team.
