STAAR Testing and Pep Rally

Park Village would like to wish the best of luck to all our 4th and 5th grade Bulldogs taking the STAAR test this week! We know you will be using your strategies and all your hard work will pay off.

Monday we showed our students how proud we are of them by throwing 4th and 5th grade an Angry Birds STAAR WARS pep rally! The campus was treated with a fun video, teachers dancing, a special dance and cheer from 2nd grade students, "Minute to Win It" competions between 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers (stacking cups and making a robot), and a whipped cream pie/Star Crunch eating contest between the administrators! We were especially delighted to be visited by our favorite Jedi, the Park Village Bulldog.

Go Bulldogs! May the SCORES be with you!

On Monday, April 1, Park Village is having a pep rally for all those 4th and 5th graders who have been working hard and will be taking the STAAR test in April. Next week we will be TIME TRAVELING into STAAR!

Monday: You're "out of sight" and we're looking for GROOVY scores. Dress in GROOVY 70s attire!

Tuesday: "Take a chill pill" and "ACE" that test. Dress in TUBULAR 80s attire!

Wednesday: "You go" and "be the bomb" on that test. Dress in SWEET 90s attire!

Thursday: ZOOM into the future and dress in FUTURE attire with your STAAR WARS Angry Birds shirt! "May the SCORES be with you."

Remember that Friday,the 29th, is NO SCHOOL. Have a wonderful and safe three day weekend Bulldogs.

Park Village will be hosting our Awards Ceremony on Feb 7, 2013, from 6 to 7 in the cafeteria. Our theme is �Roping in Success� and we encourage students to wear their rodeo attire if possible! Awards are being given to Pre-K - 5th grade for A honor Roll, A/B Honor Roll, Reading Log, and Perfect attendance for the 1st, 2^nd, and 3rd six weeks.

Bulldog Choir Sings Holiday Cheer in S.A.

The PVE Bulldog Choir has been spreading holiday cheer all over San Antonio! The Bulldog Choir performed at the Jingle Bell Jamboree on Saturday, December 1 and at the San Antonio International Airport on Saturday, December 8!

The 4th and 5th grade PVE Bulldog Choir put on a rockin' show in Terminal B at the San Antonio International Airport! Students performed under the direction of Ms. Willhoite for the 22nd Annual Holiday Music Festival sponsored by the City of San Antonio Aviation Department. The Holiday Music Festival features bands, choirs, orchestras, mariachi, and dancing groups from the San Antonio area who perform for passengers traveling through the airport during the holiday season. Our students sang 7 songs in total- "La Navidad", "Snowman Choir", "Listen to the Jingles", "Don't Eat a Poinsietta", "Chime In", "Rhythm of the Season", and "We Wish you a Merry Christmas".

Students used a variety of instruments and choreographed dance movements along with singing to keep the crowd entertained and excited for the holidays! All of our students also received a complimentary candy cane and soda from the San Antonio Aviation Department after their performance! Congratulations PVE Bulldog Choir!

5th Grade Girls Volleyball takes First Place!

Congratulations to our District 1st place Volleyball Girls team. Go Park Village Bulldogs! There were seven 5th grade girls who competed and three 4th grade girls showed to give their support.

They played seven games on Saturday, November 16 to take the District Championship.

1st Grade Bulldog Places in District Bike Rodeo

Julius Cervantes, a first grader at Park Village Elementary, qualified to participate in the Judson District Bike Rodeo. The event was held on October 22 at D.W. Rutledge Stadium. Julius competed against other first graders district wide and won third place. Way to go!

2nd Annual Park Village National Night Out

On Oct. 2 Park Village hosted our 2nd National Night Out. Teachers and staff entertained the community with fun and educational games, prizes, face painting, food and drinks, music, and a chili contest! Congratulations to the 4th grade teachers who won.

We were honored to have tables from organizations and companies such PTO, Girls Inc, Gatti's Pizza, City of San Antonio Recycling Department, SAWS, and the Animal Defense League. They provided information and even had some games as well!

We would like to thank everyone who came out for America's Night Out Against Crime!

Character Parade to be held Oct. 31

Don't miss the excitement of what promises to be a great season of football for both the Judson Rockets and Wagner Thunderbirds! 2012 Season Ticket packets will go on sale starting Monday, August 6th and running through Friday, August 24th, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at the D.W. Rutledge Stadium ticket office. Those tickets will also be sold at the "Meet the Rockets" and "Meet the Thunderbirds" events at each of the schools on August 23rd.

A Letter from Mrs. Bellinger: Be Aware of Bed Bugs

Dear Parent or Guardian,

We recently discovered a bed bug in the Pre-Kindergarten wing of Park Village Elementary. The source of bed bugs often cannot be determined, as bed bugs may be found in many places including hotels, planes, and movie theaters. Even though it is unlikely for bed bugs to infest a school, Judson Independent School District has taken immediate action by having all bedding and washable items removed and treated in the area where a sighting was noticed as well as surrounding areas. Additionally, the building will be treated this weekend by pest control specialists with an environmentally friendly green pesticide. Judson Independent School District will continue to work to provide thorough regular inspections of schools, and have licensed pest control specialists assist with pest management, as needed.

While bed bugs may be a nuisance, their bites are not known to spread disease. Bed bugs are usually active at night. The bite does not hurt, but the area may become swollen and itch, much like a mosquito bite. If you have medical concerns for your child, please contact your physician. You may also contact the school nurse for information on the proper care and treatment of bed bugs. If you have any additional questions regarding bed bugs, please contact the school office at 637-4890. We will be happy to answer any questions. Thank you for your continued support of the instructional program at Park Village Elementary.

Park Village Welcomes our NEW MASCOT!

On April 23, we had a surprise guest for our Fiesta STAAR pep rally... our new mascot! The bulldog mage his first appearance while teachers and students cracked cascarones, sang and danced, and hit the pinata. Fun was had by all and we know our students worked hard on their STAAR test.

Phonics Night for Kinder and 1st Grade

On March 20, Park Village teachers from kindergarten and 1st grade held our first Phonics Night with the intent on explaining to parents the basics of our reading program, "Success for All". Parents learned what activities students practice in class for reading, spelling, and writing. They also saw a variety of ways to implement learning experiences at home.

Each grade level presented the 4th and 5th graders with their own encouraging cheer, teachers and administration gave them wonderous pep talks, and the rally ended with a special musical performance by K-2nd grade teachers. Students heard from people in a variety of fields and discussed the real-life expecations of their job. On March 9 our first annual Career Fair with provide information on 16 careers, such as agriculture, arts, government, science, marketing, business, and health science. It will be held from 8am to 11am, when we will have early dismissal.

During this time, Career Fair speaker will judge entries for our "Career Awareness" poster contest! The theme is, "When I grow up, I want to be..." First place for Kinder-2nd grade is a four pack of tickets to the San Antonio Zoo. First place for 3rd-5th grade is an iPod. We hope to see alot of entries on Friday!

Family Phonics Night

March 20 at 6pm is Family Phonics Night, hosted by Kindergarten and 1st grade teachers. This will be a "make and take" presentation in that we will provide time and materials for you make some learning tools for home use. We will present tips on helping your children with letter sound correspondence, phonemic awareness, word blending, and sound blending. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to see what students are learning with our program "Success for All"!

Park Village Elementary is pleased to announce the collaboration with the JISD transportation bus drivers who serve Park Village in rolling out the Bus Rider of the Month Program. Each bus driver selects the student who they feel has exemplified outstanding behavior on the bus for each month. The students are recognized with certificates and tokens of appreciation from the drivers. The drivers have begun using incentives supplied by the campus to promote better behavior and bus safety. The program was spear-headed by our campus Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) committee.

Teachers were put in the students shoes to learn hands on techniques to increase the reading levels at both schools. Transportation Eases With New Student Drop Off/Pick Up Area

As construction nears end at Park Village, new stricter drop off and pick up procedures will be followed to ensure our students safety. To ease the length of time it takes to dismiss all 675 students, we will now release car riders and bus riders simultaneously. The gate to the car rider area will open at 2:30 after Pre-K and HeadStart students arrive in the main building cafeteria. This will allow for their increased safety when walking from the annex to the main building.

If children are identified as walkers, yet they leave the front of the building in a vehicle, we will no longer dismiss those students to the front of the building. We need your support to ensure all students are safe. When parents are parking in the front of the building or on side streets to circumvent the dismissal procedures, our students walking home are at risk. Walkers are the last to be released at approximately 2:40. Thank you for your continued support and assistance in ensuring our dismissal and drop off procedures are followed.

Dear Parents/Guardians: January 19, 2010

It is hard to believe the first semester is coming to a close! As the holidays are behind us, we hope that each student and family enjoyed the time off from school and had a safe and blessed holiday season. We are approaching the busiest time of the school year with much excitement. Our faculty and staff continue to rise to new heights as they work diligently to provide your children the best possible elementary education. As you know, we began the year with many new teachers and I am proud to say they have opened their hearts to your children. The quality of education they are providing each day surpasses my hopes and high expectations! Recently, we had a change in leadership and I want to welcome Mr. Joey Martinez, our new Assistant Principal. Mr. Martinez comes from the JISD Secondary Alternative School where he served as Assistant Principal for the past 3 � years. We are excited to have Mr. Martinez and his wealth of experiences assisting with discipline.

Further, as you may or may not know, our long-time campus Librarian, Ms. Eddy Lou Peterson, is retiring after many dedicated years serving Park Village Elementary families and community. We wish Ms. Peterson many happy years of retirement. We are confident she will be visible here and there as her love for Park Village will always remain. We are currently searching for the right person to fill her shoes.

We want to thank the many families who supported the various events during the first semester. The Multi-Cultural Fair by far was a smashing success thanks to the many parents who helped set-up, cook, and decorate the gym prior to the event. The increased turnout was tremendous! We especially want to acknowledge and thank our Native American and Hawaiian families for the added cultural experiences they shared. Students and families are still talking about the event. The variety of booths displaying different cultures helped our students to expand their knowledge and awareness of other cultures within our society. We would be remiss to not mention the crowds of teachers, students and families cutting loose on the gym floor-turned dance floor. It was so much fun!!!

Our 2^nd Nine-Week Awards assembly will be held Thursday, January 28, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. as we continue recognizing our students for their outstanding academic achievement, attendance, and super citizenship with evening awards celebrations. Mark your calendars as we roll out the red carpet for our young academy award honorees. We encourage parents and students to dress up for this event.

Our faculty and staff truly value the support we receive from parents/guardians. As we continue on the road to higher academic standards at PVE, we need your assistance with attendance. We continue to see a high number of students absent from school. Each day a student is absent, tardy, or leaves early, they miss an abundance of new information presented by the teacher(s) which is not recoverable. The interactions, discussion and successes that are experienced each day are impossible to recover with make-up work. Our attendance rate currently sits at 95.3%, the lowest in JISD. We currently have over 50 students who have missed 6-9 days of school thus far this year. That equates to almost two weeks of school. Please help us turn this pattern around. We have many staff members making daily calls home checking on absent students. If you have an appointment, please bring your child in afterwards on the same day with a doctor�s note and they will be counted present. We are happy to say our tardies are improving. Please know, if your child reaches 12 tardies, there will be a court case filed, likewise, if a child reaches 10 unexcused absences, a court case will be filed. Excused absences are those with doctor�s notes. Please see the handbook for other acceptable reasons to miss school. Handwritten notes are not automatically excused.

As we make plans for the second semester, we expect to have several new parent involvement opportunities. Our fabulous new Parent and Community Liaison, Ms. Hawkins, is organizing new parenting sessions, volunteer training classes each Thursday morning at 8:00a.m., as well as the upcoming Mobil Dental Lab. The Mobil Dental Lab will visit Park Village in late February and will provide free dental exams and treatment to our students with parent permission. More information will be coming soon.

On a final note, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) released the final Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) report for the 2008-2009 school year. While PVE remains on the TEA Technical Assistant Team (TAT) list, your students increased academic performance earned the school 2 Gold Performance Awards. We received a Gold Performance Award in Science for Commended Performance and a Gold Award in Mathematics for Comparable Improvement. This would not have been possible without the support of parents and guardians. With your students� continued hard work and the perseverance of our outstanding teachers, we will ultimately reach the highest standards we are aiming for. Thank you for your support in this area. The TEA School Report Card will be sent home with report cards on January 25, 2010.

As the staff and administration at PVE �Refine our Focus�, I am confident with the support of parents, and the focus on academic rigor and increased expectations for student interventions Park Village Elementary students will exceed expectations. Please know as we continue to analyze benchmark data, some restructuring of classrooms will occur of portions of the day in 3^rd, 4^th, and 5^th grades. This means we will regroup student for content specific instruction in an effort to provide intense instruction in areas of weakness as well as strengths. We appreciate your support with this instructional regrouping.

PVE Girls Volleyball Team upsets undefeated Converse!

Park Village 4th & 5th grade girls joined the district volleyball league this year. The 5th grade girls played against the 5th grade Converse team and defeated them. It was Converse's first loss in 2 years! The 4th grade girls also played against undefeated Converse and won both matches. Thanks to Coach Z and all of his hard work with the girls. We are very proud of the girls and all of their dedication and team work! Go Bulldogs!

Coach Z introduces 4th & 5th grade boys to Flag Football!

Coach Z began an intramural 4th & 5th grade flag football league at Park Village this year. Each grade was placed on 4 teams. The 4th grade teams are Vikings, Longhorns, Krazy Monkeys, & Bulldogs. The 5th grade teams are Saints, Undefeated Kings, Underdawgs and PV All Stars. The boys played on the new football field located behind the school gym. The league has been a huge success for the boys. Check the Park Village calendar for game dates & times and come out and support our boys!
