Mr. John Robertson

is in his 15th year at Metzger Middle School and in his 13th year as Head Band Director. Prior to coming to Metzger in 2007, Mr. Robertson taught two years at Westview Middle School in Austin, Texas located in the Pflugerville ISD. Mr. Robertson's responsibilities include directing the Honors Band, beginning brass classes, and day-to-day operations of the Metzger Band. Mr. Robertson also serves as the Fine Arts Department Head at Metzger. On Friday nights in the Fall, Mr. Robertson serves as the voice of Wagner High School Marching Band. 

Under the direction of Mr. Robertson, the Metzger Bands consistently received superior ratings and the coveted "Sweepstakes" award at the UIL Concert & Sight-Reading Evaluation. In 2009, the Metzger Symphonic Band was the first non-varsity band in Metzger history to earn "Sweepstakes." At the Choice Music Festivals Alamo Showcase of Music, the Metzger Honors Band has consistently been awarded "Outstanding in Class" and "Overall Outstanding Band." In 2017, the Honors Band finished 1st in 2C Region 11 and 3rd in Area G in the TMEA State Honor Band competition. This was the furthest a Judson ISD middle school band had advanced in 31 years. In his 15 years at Metzger, the number of TMEA All-Region band students increased from zero to 225. The fine arts department at Metzger received the 2018 NAMM Foundation SupportMusic Merit Award as part of the best communities for music education program. In Summer 2018 and 2019, Mr. Robertson served on the faculty at Texas Lutheran University Summer Music Academy.

Mr. Robertson has also been extremely fortunate to receive five grants: Improving Instrument Education With iPads (twice), Finale 2014: The Foundation of Music Fundamentals, Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation Grant - $30,000 in band instruments, as well as a sheet music grant from the TMEA Middle School Music Instructional Support Program (MSMISP).

In 2005, Mr. Robertson graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with an Honors Bachelor of Music. Mr. Robertson's honors thesis entitled "An Investigation of Assessment Techniques and Grading of Middle School Band Directors" is published by the UTA Honors College. While at UTA, he studied trumpet with Dr. Rick Bogard, and music education with Dr. Diane Lange and Phil Clements. Mr. Robertson also performed in various ensembles under the direction of Ray Lichtenwalter, Phil Clements, Dr. Rick Bogard, and Dr. Sergio Espinosa.

In the spring of 2005, he completed his student teaching at LD Bell High School and Bedford Junior High under the guidance of Jeremy Earnhart, Chris Ferrell, and Steve Madsen respectively.  In 2004, the LD Bell marching band claimed the 5A State Marching Band Championship, the BOA Super Regional Championship in St. Louis, MO, and the BOA Regional Championship in Arlington, TX.  In 2005, the Bedford Junior High band was a finalist in the TMEA state honor band competition.

An active clinician and adjudicator around the state, Mr. Robertson is a member of the Texas Music Education Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, and Texas Music Adjudicators Association. Mr. Robertson is a 2020 inductee into the Judson ISD Civic Hall of Honor. In his spare time he enjoys camping with his family and working as Manager for Field Dots, LLC.
