Mrs. Mariya Ortiz (former JHS Librarian)

On Friday, April 22, 2022, Mrs. Ortiz finished her last day as the Judson High School librarian.  She will be transitioning to her new position as a Reading Language Arts, and Library Services Consultant for ESC Region 20.  She will continue her work by supporting all the libraries in Region 20 so that every student, teacher, administrator, parent, and community member has the opportunity to experience the highest caliber of school library services.

Mrs. Ortiz joined the JHS Library staff in December of 2018, after having begun the year as the Librarian at Candlewood Elementary.  The 2020-2021 school year will be Mrs. Ortiz's 30th year in education, and her 21st year of librarianship.  She has served in several library settings: in PSJA ISD (in the Rio Grande Valley), Northeast ISD (San Antonio), and East Central ISD (San Antonio).  She has served as an elementary librarian, a middle school librarian, a high school librarian, a community college librarian, and even as a branch manager for the San Antonio Public Library.

Prior to becoming a librarian, Mrs. Ortiz was a high school English and Creative Writing teacher (6 years) and middle English Language Arts and Reading teacher (3 years).

Mrs. Ortiz has a Bachelor's degree from Ball State University (Muncie, IN) and a Master's in Library Science from Sam Houston State University (Huntsville, TX).  She has also holds ABD status for her EdD in Organizational Leadership with a cognate in Organizational Development from Grand Canyon University (Phoenix, AZ).

Mrs. Ortiz is a diamond-level reading, writing, grammar, and brain-based trainer for Abydos Literacy Learning International (formerly known as the New Jersey Writing Project in Texas).  She served on the Texas Teacher Advisory Board for Prentice Hall's Writing in Communication textbook series, has been the recipient of the Sue German Award for Teaching Excellence, and received the Judson Distinguished Educator of the Year Award for Judson High School for the 2020-2021 school year and for Candlewood Elementary for the 2018-2019 school year.  Mrs. Ortiz is a frequent presenter at local, state, and national level professional conferences and a published author.
