Mrs. Monica Marie Rodriguez

Welcome to Hartman Elementary School--Home of the Knights and a premier bilingual and Spanish Immersion language instructional program.  This school is an amazing place to be, and each day I am grateful to arrive at such a beautiful campus, phenomenal staff, and an excited community ready to take our next steps towards the future.  I am passionate and excited about education!!!

I am originally from El Paso, Texas where I was raised by my parents and surrounded by family in El Paso/Juarez, Mexico.  My first language was Spanish, but my parents were determined that I would learn Spanish and English fluently. My mom worked as a cook early in the morning and had to be at school by 5:30am so I waited in the car and either slept, read books, or did homework until it was time to go inside to class at Marion Manor Elementary. My dad worked out of town, so mom took me everywhere with her!

I didn't know anyone nor anything, but I did remember my mom and dad's voice saying, "respeta a tus maestros, aprende lo mas que puedas, y no le faltes el respeto a esta familia en portandote mal! [that means, "respect my teachers, learn as much as I could, and don't disrespect this family by behaving bad"].  I learned English QUICK but always kept my Spanish language active throughout my childhood, even into adulthood, because it is very important to me that I preserve my roots but embrace my future.  My parents also taught me that very hard work and self-motivation would help me achieve my goals, BUT education was the ticket to a successful life! I didn't have a grasp on college as a little girl, but it was not negotiable that I was expected to go to the local university (UTEP - Go Miners).

I attended Ysleta High School, home of the "Indians" which bordered a native American reservation, where I graduated with honors, then went on to attend the University of Texas at El Paso majoring in American and British Literature with a minor in Business Administration.  From the start, teaching was challenging, exciting, uplifting, and it is WHO I AM and not just a job. I AM a teacher - either of kids or adults and my mission is to always leave things better than I found them.

I am a family-oriented person.  I am so thankful to have celebrated 29 years of marriage this year to my wonderful husband, who moved us here in 1998 when he was hired to work as an online school director for the region center.  He has since remained an active educator in the world of creating children's resources and providing schools with amazing tools for learning. Together we have grown our family and raised two amazing children (Sofia and Amalisa), four godchildren, two grandsons, and one dog at the moment. Preserving our cultural beliefs, traditions, and language is paramount to my family and I have brought that to Hartman over the years since December, 2018 when I was assigned to lead the campus by the superintendent.

My career experiences include elementary special education teacher, middle school English/math/social studies/science teacher, high school English/Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, special education: behavior modification/autism specialist/life skills teacher, and being the special education administrator at a high school for the last 16 years prior to coming to Judson ISD. As I looked for a new work home, Judson ISD offered me a district office job in 2015 as Assistant Director for Special Education, then Director of Human Resources, Assistant Principal of KittyHawk Middle School, Principal for Hartman Elementary and have been at Hartman Elementary since the 2018-2019 school year.

Life has taken me through many roads, but always to advocate for children, their families, and their education.  It is with great pride that I start my 29th year in education and serve as your Principal.  Please join me in a partnership as we care, nurture, and carve your child's pathway towards their future.  At Hartman, we believe that the time spent here will provide the foundation for curiosity and learning while teaching our students to be:

Humble
Accountable
Respectful
Trustworthy
Magnanimous
Authentic
Noble

Once a Knight, Always a Knight!
