ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is a K-12 initiative that supports students identified as Emergent Bilingual in achieving high English proficiency. This program combines instruction with academic subjects, using the second language to facilitate learning in areas like science, social studies, and mathematics. ESL employs Content-Based Language Instruction strategies aimed at teaching English reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills to Emergent Bilingual students. Instruction is conducted in English and focuses on developing content knowledge, cognitive abilities, and study skills alongside English language skills.
ESL PROGRAM MODELS
ESL Content Based – All Elementary Campuses An English acquisition program that serves students identified as emergent bilingual students through English instruction by a teacher appropriately certified in ESL under TEC, §29.061(c), through English language arts and reading, mathematics, science, and social studies.
ESL Pull Out – All Secondary Campuses
An English acquisition program that serves students identified as emergent bilingual students through English instruction provided by an appropriately certified ESL teacher under the TEC, §29.061(c), through English language arts and reading.
