Star Athletes Producing Excellence
Wagner High School
Julian Cantu has been a captain for the Wagner Thunderbirds soccer team for the last two seasons. His leadership is
demonstrated on and off the field. Julian exhibits great study habits in the classroom and always pays close attention to
his academic responsibilities. Also, Julian was one of our leading scorers this year and always seemed to find a way to lift
his team, whether it was making a great hustle play or simply sending a beautiful pass to assist another scorer. For much
of the season Julian decided to play through an injury that would have kept many other players on the bench. Above all,
Julian is a Star Athlete, because he plays soccer with more heart than most athletes. It was this level of heart that led
Julian to be named to the All-District 1st Team for this season. What remains for Julian’s soccer career is unknown, but he
is looking into playing at the next level. With the right instruction and training the sky is the limit for Julian. His talent and
work ethic exceed most and if he stays dedicated to his passion for playing this game, he will have the chance to play
competitively for many years to come. We wish Julian all the best and expect only great things from him after he leaves
On February 15, 2014, Wagner Junior Julie Mata (40-1) won her first Girls 5A State Championship in the 110 lb. weight
class. She defeated her opponent, Europa Cabada of Coronado El Paso, by a score of 4-1. What is impressive is that in
January Julie wrestled and defeated a competitor from Clear Falls who was in a bigger weight class by a score of 15-5.
That same wrestler that Julie beat later ended up being crowned the 119 lbs. state champion. Julie is a 2 time Regional
Champion and was voted twice as the UIL Region 4 Most Outstanding Girl Wrestler. Julie should be favored to repeat as
the State Champion as a senior next year.
