JUDSON ISD LAUNCHES NEW WELLNESS PROGRAM
It's a new exercise and wellness challenge that is open to all JISD employees.
Research has shown that getting exercise on a regular basis can improve overall health and help
prevent disease. And it can all be achieved by walking just 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. With
that in mind, the Judson ISD Human Resource Department is launching The JISD Employee Walking
Challenge. It's a new exercise and wellness challenge that is open to all JISD employees. With April
bringing National Walking Day, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to encourage staff to begin a
new effort to improve how their bodies feel and work. The voluntary program is a way of promoting
and encouraging walking as a consistent part of a healthy lifestyle that can profoundly affect a
person's overall well-being...like it did for one person you may know.
"After walking the half marathon I did nothing for 2 weeks. I found that I was missing
the exercise."
JISD Board Member Gilbert Flores
Judson ISD Board Member Gilbert Flores has seen a big
change. At age 61, Mr. Flores decided to walk in the San
Antonio Rock-n-Roll Marathon sort of as a lark because a
friend at work challenged him to do it. He and his friend
joined a support group that was training to walk in the event
so they would be prepared. He finished in 3:43:52. After
that he says, "I did nothing for 2 weeks. I found that I was
missing the exercise. I decided that I would look for other
events to walk/run." He began to see dramatic changes in
the process. Before his San Antonio R-n-R Marathon
challenge he weighed 240 lbs. and wore a size 50 suit. His
last big event was the New Orleans R-n-Roll Marathon
where he took more than 40 minutes off his finish time and
now he fits into a size 46 suit. In fact, he's so enthusiastic
about his life change, he'd like to get back to
running/walking with a group again. The Judson ISD
Walking Challenge would be a great reason to start up a
group with him or anyone else.
