Competing for the first year in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Journalism events,
Judson High School senior, Nena Beecham, took first place in district competition at Canyon
High School this spring. Nena, an International Baccalaureate (IB) student and honor
graduate, has always enjoyed reading and writing. “I have always been an avid reader and
enjoy all types of writing, including poetry. My dad also enjoys writing, so I developed an
interest based on watching him and reading his writings,” Nena said.
championship wasn’t her only
tournament. Nena also placed
second in both feature and
news writing and fourth in
headline writing, receiving
medals in all four events. With
that, she will compete for the
Regional title in three events:
Editorial, News, and Feature
writing. Nena is grateful that
she was introduced to UIL
events her senior year. “I did not know anything about the UIL academic events until our UIL
coach, Ms. Bass, began recruiting and coaching students at the beginning of the school year.
Now, I am looking forward to working on various publications in university,” Nena said.
All of Nena’s hard work has certainly paid off, affording her some great options for college.
She was homeschooled from kindergarten through 9
grade, training her for academic
success as an independent learner. “When I came to Judson, I wanted to challenge myself
by enrolling in the most rigorous courses. That’s why I decided to enroll in the IB program,”
Nena said. Since it is the highest level of academics at Judson, the mindset is different. She’s
seen the students are close and supportive, genuinely concerned about each other’s
success. “The IB program has been my favorite experience at Judson. I am close to my IB
family, and they have had a huge impact on my success,” Nena said.
Nena was accepted to both of her top university choices: University of Texas, Austin,
Georgetown University, a private research university in Washington, D.C. She
plans to
attend Georgetown in the fall, majoring in International Relations.
