New High School Nearing

Name and Mascot

Judson ISD’s new high school is reach-

ing its height of construction activity. It is

closing in on 70 percent completion with a

name and mascot right around the corner.

Much of the utility lines and infrastructure are

in place with heating and air conditioning

units in the process of being installed.

At the time of the writing of this article,

the community survey asking for input on the

school name is about to wrap up with the

choosing of the school mascot to follow soon

after that. So far, the number of name submis-

sions is approaching 300. The board will take

the top suggestions and decide what the name

will be possibly as soon as the August board

meeting.

With something as high interest as this

new school, there have been some questions

about what will be offered there. All the pro-

grams that are typically a part of high school

will be there…including band, theater, athlet-

ics, etc. But there will be a ramping up of

some programs like athletics simply because

the school will only open to freshmen and

sophomore,

expanding

each year.

Also, facili-

ties such as the ath-

letic practice fields

and a performing

arts venue will not

initially be at com-

petition level, but

improvement plans

are in the works

waiting for the sup-

port of community

voters.

From the

very beginning, when this new high school

was proposed to voters, it was seen as help to

alleviate a growing overcrowding issue at Jud-

son High School. But it’s growing into much

more and the community’s participation in its

creation is showing how much they want to

make it their own. That’s great to see.
