Ms. Sylma Ruiz

My name is Sylma Ruiz. I am PROUD to be a Special Education teacher at Woodlake Hills Middle School. I look forward to teaching your child and forming a long-lasting love for History.

I was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico as the oldest of 3 sisters. I started college at 16 but my dad would not let me get a driver's license! I went to the University of Puerto Rico where I earned a Master's in Psychology, with a focus on Education. I taught Psychology 101 to University students and was an assistant in the Physiological Psychology lab.

Shortly after, I got married and taught High School Psychology for 4 years.  I then became a stay at home mom to four amazing children. When my kids were a little older, I taught Pre-K at their school. Years later, I homeschooled all 4 of my children for 3 years. In 2001, we moved to Florida for a year, then Atlanta (too cold!) and in 2004, fate brought us to Texas!

Currently, I am teaching Applied/Resource, as well as Co-Teaching US History 8 and Texas History. Previously, I taught Applied Science 6-8 for 9 years. From 2013-2018 I was an adviser for the Yearbook and the school photographer. I am still the school photographer! In 2018, I was honored to receive the "Spirit of Judson” award! I have been in Woodlake Hills for 10 years I love it here, I love the relationships built as well as my students; I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else and well... the rest is HISTORY! :)

Cheers to a GREAT year!
