Mr. Walter Sparkman

Walter W. Sparkman has been teaching band since 1989.  He received his Bachelors Degree from Texas State University in San Marco, formerly Southwest Texas State University and his Masters Degree from the University of Houston.  His professional affiliations include; Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and Kappa Kappa Psi.  He is the Texas Music Educators Association Region XII Band Division Chairman, the TMEA Area E & G Honor Band Contest Chairman and serves on the state U.I.L. / TMEA Music Advisory Committee. 

Mr. Sparkman started his teaching carrier at J. Frank Dobie High School in Houston, where he served as Assistant Band Director for 7 years.  In 1996 he accepted a position as Director of Bands at Canyon High School in New Braunfels.  During his 13 year tenure the CHS band grew from 95 students to over 270, won numerous “Best in Class” awards, advanced to the U.I.L. Area Marching Contest five times, was named an Area Marching Finalist three times and participated in the U.I.L. Texas State Marching Band Contest.  The CHS Wind Ensemble earned consistent Sweepstakes awards in U.I.L., won “Best in Class” & “Outstanding Ensemble” awards in numerous festivals and advanced to the Area level in the TMEA Honor Band competition twice.  In the spring of 2009 the band traveled to New York to perform at Carnegie Hall in conjunction with the National Youth Concert Series. 

Mr. Sparkman is currently the Director of Bands at Woodlake Hills Middle School in Judson ISD.  The WHMS Honors Band and Jazz Band have both been named “Best in Class” & “Outstanding Ensemble” in several concert and jazz festivals and earned “Superior” ratings at U.I.L. Concert Contest.  In the fall of 2011 Mr. Sparkman was a recipient of the JISD “Spirit of Judson Award” for excellence in education.  In his spare time he serves as Choir Director for Peace Lutheran Church in New Braunfels, Texas.
