Mr. Lopez, Jose M
Hi, as you know, my name is Mr. Lopez and I currently teach 5th grade math as a monolingual and bilingual teacher. I'm currently in my 18th year of teaching and I have taught from 4th grade up to 8th grade. As a bilingual 5th grade teacher, I can sympathize with some of my students as far as language barrier. I, too, went through a language transition as a 10 year old. We spoke Spanish at home, but English at school and with friends in New York City. Then, at the age of 10, we moved to Puerto Rico where school was in Spanish. I didn't know how to read or write in Spanish. It was not easy, I felt very out of place. I guess I managed and went on to finish school, and some college. Later, I joined the United States Air Force. I served 21 years. While in the service, I was able to get my college degree and my masters in business administration (MBA). It was not easy to work a full-time job and go to school, but I kept my eye on this goal.
I enjoy teaching 5th grade math. I'm confident that I can help these students with learning different ways to perform the basic math operations and have a strong foundation for middle school.
