Mr. Joshua Burton

Hello Y'all,

I'm Mr. Burton, and I'm the APPLE (Autism Programming for Positive Learning Experiences) teacher here at Hartman Elementary.  I have been teaching in various forms for over twenty years to people of all ages, newborns through the elderly.  Until 2021, my teaching experience was mainly behind a pulpit, in counseling sessions, or working with children, youth, and/or teens.  After years of teaching various age groups in multiple settings, my wife (who is also a Special Education teacher) encouraged me to give public school a shot.  I started by working as an aid for two years and using that time in classrooms to observe and learn from other teachers.

I am thrilled to be working at Hartman as your APPLE teacher. I love my students and I will love yours as well.  It is my desire and great joy to lead and challenge my students to grow beyond the limits others have set for them.

Personally, I have children who were once in a special education program.  I know how disheartening it can be to be told, "your child will never..." or "your child isn't capable of...".  I never allowed those kinds of statements to shape my children's beliefs and opinions about themselves.  All my children have graduated high school.  I have two sons who are currently serving in the United States Navy, another son who is on the management track at Whataburger, and an autistic daughter who recently acquired a full-time job working in the general public - something which most 'specialists' would call an impossibility for someone with autism.

My schedule is basic, but my students and I stay busy, so please allow 24-48 hours for me to return your call or email.

My conference period is 9:30-10:20 - this is the only time during the school day in which I am able to take and/or make calls.  Otherwise, phone calls and text conversations have to wait until before and/or after instructional time.  Thank you in advance for your understanding.
