Degrees and Certifications:
Hardin-Simmons University Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy UTSA Music Teaching Certification Master of Music in Vocal Performance
Welcome to my world, the wonderful world of music. My name is Mrs. Burrows. I have been teaching for more 33 years, everything from preschool music to college students. This is my seventeenth year as a music teacher in Judson ISD, and I cannot think of a better place to work or spend my time.
I graduated from Hardin-Simmons University in 1979, with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy. I then attended UTSA where I earned my Music Teaching Certification in 1980, certifying me to teach preschool through 12th grade music. In 1983, I completed a Master of Music in Vocal Performance, also from UTSA.
My teaching career began in Northside ISD, and I later moved to the Dallas area and taught for Plano ISD. I have also taught at private schools in both San Antonio and California. For five years, I served as an associate professor on the music and voice faculties of St. Mary’s University, Stephen F. Austin State University and Dallas Baptist University. I have also spent many years as a private music instructor. As a singer I have been a NATS winner, a National Young Artist finalist and winner of other vocal awards.
I began teaching in Judson ISD in 2005, where I taught music at Crestview Elementary, a nationally recognized Blue Ribbon School, for 13 years, prior to opening Wortham Oaks four years ago. While teaching for Judson, I have been the recipient of several grants, which include the First Mark Teachers Grant, the HEB Educator Grant, and the JEF Innovative Teacher Grant and the TMEA Grant. I have twice been awarded the Spirit of Judson Award, at both Crestview and at Wortham Oaks.
In addition to my music degrees, I hold the following music certifications: MIE Keyboard Lab Certification, Kodaly Certification (Levels I, II and III) from Texas State University, Orff Level I, World Drumming Level I, and Marimba Workshop Level I. I am a member of several state and national professional music organizations.
The following quotes sum up my philosophy as a music educator.
“Music should belong to everyone and not just to a musical elite. It is the right of every citizen to be taught the basic elements of music. Music multiplies all that is beautiful and of value in life.” (Kodaly)
“The fact that children can make beautiful music is less significant than the fact that music can make beautiful children.” (Lavender)
The future is WOW at Wortham Oaks Elementary School.
