It's Sweepstakes For Judson HS Choirs

The Judson High School Choir program entered five choirs in the recent UIL Region 11 Choir Concert and sight Reading contest at the JISD Performing Arts Center.  At the end of the contest they went 5 for 5 in winning Sweepstakes! That's the highest award given in these contests.  Congratulations to these students for all the hard work they have put into the year and congratulations also go out to Choir Directors David Short and Tiffany Cristo.

Kitty Hawk Sweeps Sweepstakes!

This is Band and Choir UIL Competition season and it's great to see so many trophies being brought back to JISD.  One of the latest is the Kitty Hawk Middle School Choir that received 3 Sweepstakes Awards!  The school's Varsity, Junior Varsity and Men's Choirs all won the top level award at the Region 11 UIL Concert and Sight Reading Evaluation.

But get this...out of the 39 events in the competition, only 12 received sweepstakes designations and out of those 12, only 6 got top ratings across the board in every category.  Kitty Hawk's 3 choir groups were half of those elite 6 ensembles to achieve the highest possible scores.  Wow!  By the way, they were the only school to walk away with 3 Sweepstakes trophies. Congratulations to this great fine arts program.

Also, for the first time in 11 years, the Kitty Hawk Honors and Symphonic Bands both received the Sweepstakes Award at UIL Concert and Sight Reading Evaluation held at Burbank High School in March.  Of the 48 bands entered, only 19 Sweepstakes awards were earned.  Even more special, Kitty Hawk is one of only 3 schools with two bands receiving this prestigious honor.?  Congratulations to all!

Judson Choir Hall Dedicated To Long Time Director

The influence and the impact that Kay Sherrill had on Judson High School students can not be truly known because she touched so many lives in her many years there.  As a show of appreciation for all she has done for students and the overall music program, the school's choir hall was formally dedicated to her and her work.  Look for the complete story along with more pictures in the March 2017 Judson Post Edition.

Huge Music Scholarship Goes To Judson Student

L-R Jesus Hernandez III, Principal; Dr. Carl Montoya, JISD Superintendent; Scott Rogers; Richard and Patty Rogers; David Short, Choir Director (Courtesty Claudia Quiroz, JHS Publications)

The Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) awards its Bill Cormack Scholarship to one student in the state each year and it went to a Judson High School student.  Scott Rogers, who is in the Judson Choir and is a talented pianist, received the scholarship worth $15,000 to study Music Education in Texas.  Executive Director Robert Floyd personally called Judson Principal Jesse Hernandez to let him know about the award and how qualified Scott was to win it.  He is a three year All-State Choir member and sings professionally with the San Antonio Chamber Choir and plays piano and percussion in the Youth Orchestra of San Antonio.

Scott plans on a double-major in Music Education and Piano Performance.  They've kept this award in the family since the only other JISD student to win this scholarship was Scott's brother Ryan Rogers who graduated from Judson High School in 2013.
