Metzger Music Program Garners National Award

Music is such a great part of a balanced education. Research continues to support the many benefits that students see when they participate in some form of music performance.  It's wonderful that can come in the form of the band, orchestra, choir in their school or even learning to play an instrument outside the school setting.  Metzger Middle School's music program has been setting the bar very high for years turning out some wonderful student musicians.  That has now resulted in the school receiving the Support Music Merit Award from the NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education.  A big part of that commitment is the way Metzger's music efforts provide access and education to all students.

We congratulate Metzger's Director of Bands Mr. John Robertson, Assistant Band Director Bryant Aynes, Orchestra Director Brian Coker, Choir Director Andrew Sanchez, and Principal Dr. Tracey Valree.

Patriot Percussionists Pick Up State Honors

The Veterans Memorial High School music program is growing and showing everyone that they are making quality a tradition at JISD's newest high school.  The percussion ensemble recently competed in the TECA State Championships and walked away with Best Artistry and Best Music awards.  For such a young school, these,  and so many other Patriot students are making an impact across San Antonio and the state already.  Congratulations to them for their hard work and achievement.

Sweepstakes Win For Wagner Varsity Orchestra

The Wagner Varsity Orchestra competed in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Concert and Sight-Reading Competition at Steele High School. They performed three pieces for a panel of three judges, and then had to read a piece of music for the first time in front of another panel of three judges. The Varsity Orchestra earned a 1st rating (which is labeled as a Superior performance) in both the Concert and Sight-Reading components of this competition, earning them what is referred to as "sweepstakes". This is the first time that they have received this distinction under the direction of Mrs. Katherine Gonzalez, and the first since 2013. The Non-Varsity Orchestra competed as well, and received Excellent ratings in both categories.

Wagner Musicians Earn Sweepstakes

The Wagner High School Wind Ensemble competed recently in the UIL Concert Contest and came away with Superior Ratings in Marching, Concert and Sight Reading.  That's winning Sweepstakes in UIL Competition!  Congratulations to these students who have worked very hard.

Metzger Bands Clean Up For Sweepstakes

The Metzger Band program continues to show it's tremendous quality and is solidifying its reputation as a high performing group of musicians.  For the second straight year, both the Metzger Honors and Symphonic Bands received Sweepstakes 1st Division ratings from all six judges. That means they got the highest rating from all six judges in both a concert setting and in sight reading.  Sight reading is playing a piece as a group that no one has seen before. The students are given a few minutes to look at their parts and the band director is allowed to talk them through it for a very limited amount of time and then they play it to the best of their ability...that's tough.  But both bands aced both categories.
