2017 Bond Forums: What's It All About?

The 2017 JISD Bond is a proposal for voters' consideration on the May 6th election ballot. The Judson ISD Board of Trustees called for the bond in its February 2017 regular meeting.  It involves construction at Veterans Memorial High School. JISD invites everyone to two upcoming 2017 Bond Forums. Upcoming forums will be at Veterans Memorial High School - Cafeteria on March 29, 2017 at 6:30-7:30 pm. The second will be at Woodlake Hills Middle School – Cafeteria on April 5, 2017 from 6:30-7:30 pm. These forums will be information and the public is invited to hear the details of the proposal and ask questions.

Will the 2017 bond include the middle school planned for Wortham Oaks as well?

Steve Linscomb

The 2017 Bond will only address the last phase of Veterans Memorial High School. $60 Million. This would include an additional academic wing to handle more enrollment, a Performing Arts Auditorium (similar to Wagner HS) and finishing off the athletic fields to varsity play quality.

Are only home owners on the northern side of the district contributing to the 2017 bond? and if its district wide why are there no bond forums south of FM 78 & walzem road?

Steve Linscomb

There are other forums still to be scheduled to encompass all the district. Please check the 2017 Bond Homepage for more information. http://www.judsonisd.org/bond/forums.html

I can see that the bond is for Veteran Memorial but when will the parking lot at Judson High School be fixed? The pot holes in the parking lot are wide and deep. It is very dangerous for drivers. Its embarrassing to have other schools come for numerous events and have to drive through our pot hole filled parking lot. We really should take care of what we already have before building other things. And.... Why is Judson and Wagner sharing a field and Veteran Memorial will have their own? Judson is the foundation their would be no Wagner or Veteran Memorial with out it. Just some things that a lot of people are wondering about.

Steve Linscomb

Thank you for your question.
The parking lot project will begin directly after the end of the school year (summer 2017) so that phase one by Box Office will be in finished condition by the next football season...phase two by the end zone right after that and then phase three by the gym should be finished by mid fall semester. There also may be some limitation to access to that parking lot by big rigs that have in the past parked there for overnight or longer stays. The thinking is that’s how some of the damage in the past may have occurred.

Veterans Memorial HS will only have its own varsity level practice fields…just like Judson and Wagner. Right now those campus (Veterans) practice fields are not the same quality level as the other high school campuses. All UIL varsity scheduled games will still be at Rutledge or the JISD sports complex for all three high schools. The athletic field part of the bond is strictly to bring that campus (Veterans Memorial) up to equity in quality of athletic facilities as the other two comprehensive high schools.
Again, thank you for your question and feedback.

In researching info on this bond, I came upon an article by KSAT 12 (18 Feb 2016), "Judson ISD calls for $265.8M bond ... for the May 2016 election." The article listed five projects to be funded, of which one was to "add academic, performing arts and varsity-level fields to Mackey HS" ... same project as 2017 bond for Veterans Memorial HS. Since there is no Mackey HS in JISD, I presume they meant VMHS. If that is the case, why is the board requesting another $60M this year (from project updates on JISD bond website, appears 2016 bond was approved)?

I apologize if this info was already provided during the two community meetings held for this bond. I'm fairly new to the County and am just learning of upcoming election issues, so was unaware of the meetings. Thanks much!

Ms. Thomas,
Thank you for your question. The reason that the board is calling for this latest $60 million bond is because that was the one proposition (of the 4 propositions) in the last bond (2016) that did not pass. That was likely due to the controversy surrounding the name of the campus (at that time was Mackey High School). The board heard the voters, decided to change the name and now they are asking the voters to reconsider. Of the $265 million 2016 bond, $214 million of it passed.
