Texas Southern Visits Wagner, Judson With Scholarships

Dr. Willis Mackey with JISD Graduates now TSU students

Different colleges and universities do their recruiting different ways, but most don't necessarily come to your high school campus with their president and hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships. That's what Texas Southern University does.  TSU staff complete with University President Dr. John Rudley were touring select high schools in the area to speak with students, present the unique attributes of Texas Southern and offer students scholarships on the spot.  They visited both Wagner and Judson High School on their own charter-style TSU bus.

At Wagner, university officials presented scholarships to the top 10 percent and Top 15 percent of the senior class to be used if they agree to commit to TSU which is located in downtown Houston. More than 50 students were given the offer by the school.

The TSU bus also stopped at Judson High School where a number of scholarships were awarded as well.  This stopped included personal scholarship money coming from JISD Superintendent Dr. Willis Mackey and TSU President Dr. Rudley.  Each gave three scholarships worth $1000 to students going to TSU for a total of 6 going to individual students.  In addition to that, 6 scholarships worth $500 dollars were given to six TSU students who are products of Judson ISD who had taken time out of their school schedule to come on the tour for a few days and recruit at their alma mater.

All told today, more than $800,000 in scholarships were presented at the two events.  Congratulations to these students and a big thank you to Dr. Rudley and his staff for making the effort to spend time with our students.
