Spotlights on JSTEM Academy

JSTEM Academy is proud and honored to spotlight the Career and Technology Team. JSTEM is a Project Lead the Way showcase school as well as the only SMART lab in JISD and they couldn't do it without this team.

The team consisting of Russell Baskin, Ashtine Elliott, and Angel Lones-Watkins gives students a chance to do various projects that not only stretch their minds but also give them insight into how programming, engineering design process, and design fit into the real world. Some projects include, but are not limited to, design and modeling, green architecture, learning how to build different mechanisms, program robots, learning to code...the list has endless possibilities.

The 7th graders are currently working on designing a mindfulness room for all students in the school to enjoy. JSTEM 8th graders are working on a combination of robotics design and coding. With their tireless dedication and growth mindset, these three teachers are the epitome of how and why STEM education is such a focus in the 21st century. Skills used in the GT courses are used all year throughout the student’s core curriculum.

Just in this department alone, last year, Angel Lones-Watkins was recognized as our JSTEM Distinguished Educator and won the Airforce Association STEM Teacher of the Year 2021 award. Russell Baskin has been recognized as a volunteer of the year by being the Head Referee of the Alamo Region in First Lego League Robotics. With all of this talent, it is no surprise that we are grateful and honored to have these amazing educators a part of the JISD family.

" The JSTEM family of teachers strive to provide middle school students independent and collaborative opportunities solving real world problems using 21st century skills. Through science, technology, engineering, and math, each student is provided an individualized educational experience that will prepare them for their future endeavors in the globalized society."
