Arbor Day Celebration At Crestview

Arbor Day celebration at Crestview ES

Each year, the City of Live Oak and the Live Oak Village Garden Club partner together for an Arbor Day ceremony. This year's theme is Healthy Trees, Healthy Lives. Crestview Elementary School hosted the ceremony because of its participation in an Arbor Day poster contest. But it was much more than a poster contest. Dr. Ball attended and read the book The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein to the students and then another special guest showed up...Smokey Bear! If you remember the story of Smokey Bear, a tree played a big role in his surviving a forest fire as a cub. The Crestview Student Choir also performed This Land Is Your Land and A World of Difference to set the stage for the tree planting event.

Live Oak Mayor Mary Dennis spoke to the kids and read an Arbor Day proclamation on behalf of the City of Live Oak. The assembly also featured Tree Care Board Chairman Mario Ward and Mark Kroeze from the Texas A&M Forest Service who escorted Smokey Bear to where all the students were waiting. Live Oak Village Garden Club representative June Adair was on hand to announce the winners of the contest and then everyone gathered outside where a new bur oak tree was planted to commemorate the day. Afterward, free trees were given away for planting!
