Judson High School’s Coach Joel Call named NFHS Coach of the Year for Boys’ Track & Field

On Wednesday, April 27, 2022, Judson High School’s Coach Joel Call was named National Federation of State High School Associations Coach of the Year for Boys’ Track & Field for the 2019-2020 season.

“It is always such an honor to receive an award like this. With this award and others, all the credit goes to our amazing student athletes and the great assistant coaches we have,” Call said. “I always perceive these as team awards. Without the awesome hard working young men and coaches, these awards would not be possible.”

The National Federation of State High School Associations bestows this prestigious award to one coach in each sport for each state association. Recipients of this award reflect excellent coaching abilities on and off the athletic arena.

Call has been a pillar of the Judson High School community, as a student athlete and an employee of the district for the past 18 years.

“I have always loved this place and what our community and student body stands for. I am humbled and honored to have been given the awesome responsibility to coach these young men,” Call said. “Each day, I come to work I try not to view this as a job, but as a calling. I love these kids and how they work so unselfishly for each other, that is just the mentality that we have always had here in this community.”

Especially with athletics, the program’s success is rooted in what they call “Rocket Pride,” a slogan that is defined by “doing your best, not sweating the rest, and doing things in the right way a particular way.”

“Nothing could be truer when it comes to track. Track is not an easy sport nor is practice fun. It is a revealer of character and guts. We take pride in doing our best without having any regrets, giving everything we have for our teammates, and representing what's on the front of our uniforms; ‘JUDSON,’” Call said.

The University Interscholastic League will recognize Call for his outstanding contributions to the Track & Field coaching profession and the milestone of achieving Coach of the Year at the 2022 UIL Track & Field State Championships on Saturday, May 14.
