On Thursday, October 9, as Judson ISD celebrated the official ribbon cutting of Selma Elementary, the first school built in the City of Selma.

The event brought together parents, students, elected officials, and community members to commemorate the occasion. Principal Dr. Melissa Martinez welcomed attendees and introduced Selma Elementary students Aldo Gonzales and Anberlin Garza, who led the crowd in U.S. and Texas pledges.

Board President Monica Ryan expressed gratitude to the parents and community for its support of the 2022 Bond, which made the new campus possible.

“This bond would not have passed if our entire community had not come together for our students,” Ryan said. “We now officially turn this over to you Selma Stallions staff, students, and families. It’s time for you to start writing the history and legacy for Selma Elementary in the days, months, years and decades to come.”

During his remarks, Superintendent Dr. Milton Fields emphasized the deeper meaning of the new school and its role in the community.

“This new campus is more than just a building, it’s a promise,” Fields said. “A promise that every child deserves access to a high-quality education close to home. A promise that we will continue to grow and adapt to meet the needs of our families. With this school, the phrase ‘neighborhood school’ takes on new meaning, one rooted in connection, care, and community.”

Both Fields and Ryan extended their thanks to the JISD Facilities Department, Nunnely Construction, MTR Engineers, DBR Engineers, RSCR Structural Engineers, and the many business partners who worked tirelessly to ensure the campus was ready for students on the first day of the 2025 school year.

Judson ISD also thanks Mayor Tom Daly and the entire Selma City Council for their support and for joining in the celebration of this important milestone for the Selma community.
