Young girls holding certificates standing with coaches and high school athletes

Before the sun rose over Judson High School, a group of determined young runners from Converse Elementary gathered for a milestone moment, their first three-mile run. These girls are part of Cougars on the Run, a running club preparing for an upcoming 5K race. But they’re not doing it alone. They’re being mentored by members of the Judson High School Softball and Cross Country teams, who showed up bright and early to stretch, run, and cheer them on every step of the way.

This all began because Valentina Jaksic, a member of Cougars on the Run, is a JHS Softball Super Fan. Valentina never misses a Rocket Softball game. When JHS Softball Coach Theresa Urbanovsky learned that Valentina was training for a 5K, she saw an opportunity to give back.

“We knew we wanted to support Valentina the way she’s always supported us,” said Urbanovsky. “Now, we are working with all of the girls and empowering them by teaming them with one of our players. It is a really special bond these girls are building.”

What started as a gesture of appreciation has grown into a powerful mentorship. Each elementary runner is paired with a high school athlete, creating connections that go beyond running. The girls are gaining confidence, strength, and a sense of community, all thanks to the support of their mentors.

Cougars on the Run is sponsored by Converse Elementary teachers Pamela Stanfield, Kimberly Medina, and Ernestina Cray, who have been instrumental in organizing and encouraging the girls every step of the way. You can cheer on Cougars on the Run at their first official race on November 16th at Mission Park!
