Susan McIlhenny believes in longevity. She does the big things in life in half centuries. She was married to her late husband for 53 years, and she has called Judson ISD her work home since 1976, for 50 years. Her father used to say that anything worth doing is worth overdoing, and she has carried that philosophy with her throughout her life.
In her five decades as a paraprofessional at JISD, McIlhenny has embraced change. She has supported teachers in PE, cared for sick staff and students in the campus clinic, guided instruction in the computer lab, and now serves alongside our special education teachers and students.
“Judson has been good to me. It’s been a great place to work,” McIlhenny said.
And she has been good to Judson, too. Over the years, she has supported countless students and families, many of whom still keep in touch. It’s those connections, she says, that bring her joy and keep her rooted in her work. Now, she is watching generations come through the doors.
“It’s the kiddos, it’s the students, it’s the families. The families are great. I’ve been to weddings of kids who went to school here, and now they have kids, and some of them have kids that go to school here. You know, it’s just a great community,” McIlhenny said.
Her spirit of service extends beyond her work. She helps raise funds through the Live Oak Citizens Assisting Police, serves as vice president of the Live Oak Humane Society, and in ATPE, all organizations focused on giving back.
“I like to stay busy. And if I can make a difference, I want to do that,” she said.
For 50 years, she has made a difference every single day in Judson ISD. She does it through acts of kindness, offered consistently. For her, the formula is uncomplicated.
“My belief is that you treat these children like you would want your own child to be treated. That’s what we do here.”
